This post will cover How to Do a Jiu Jitsu Collar Choke

The jiu jitsu collar choke is a way to submit an opponent by cutting off the blood supply to their brain from in front of him. It is effective in jiu jitsu sparring since an opponent is usually wearing a heavy uniform called a "gi." To perform the jiu jitsu collar choke you must be able to pull firmly on your opponent's garments. The technique can be useful in real life situations only if your opponent is wearing something that wont tear like a jacket or sports coat.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Collar Choke Instructions
  1. Reach across your opponent's body with your right hand and grab the inside of his collar. Do this with an underhand grip. Your palm should face up with your fingers curled inside the collar and your thumb on the outside. It is very important to grab as deep as possible inside the collar. Ideally your right hand should be directly behind your opponent's neck.
  2. Form an "X" with your arms by reaching across your opponent's body with your left hand. Your left arm should cross underneath your right arm.
  3. Grab your opponent's collar with your left hand. This should be on the opposite side of the collar than your right hand. Just like your right hand, reach as far back on your opponent's collar as you can. You wont be able to get as deep as your right hand but do your best. Your palm should face up with your fingers curled inside the collar and your thumb on the outside. Squeeze both fists tight.
  4. Twist both wrists inward at the same time. This will have the immediate effect of pinching your opponent's carotid arteries in his neck and cutting off the blood supply to his brain. The ulna bones in your forearms are sharp and act as a clamp on your opponent's carotid arteries as you twist your arms.
  5. Bend your elbows and pull your opponent toward you. This is a very natural motion and you will probably do it without thinking about it. This motion does several things. It will help you twist your wrists and tighten your pinch on your opponent's neck. It also reduces the distance between you and your opponent reducing his ability to strike you as you choke him. It also locks in the jiu jitsu collar choke so your opponent can not pull your hands off and counter your technique.

The jiu jitsu collar choke can be very dangerous if applied too forcefully to someone's neck. Use extreme caution and release the jiu jitsu collar choke immediately when your opponent submits.
