Early in your development, you need a general BJJ. In other words, you need to develop the basic skills in all areas of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. (You may be likely to specialize a little more, but it will come much later, usually near the purple belt).
So, now you need to make sure you have all the basics. You really do not want it too under-developed area of your Jiu-Jitsu game!
One way to know if there are great holes in your game by using a checklist, such as;
Try these positions in the order that you learn:
- Closed guard
- Back mount
- Open guard
- Half guard
- Side mount
- Knee mount
- Full mount
This list is a useful tool to decide what techniques to practice, and positions should your sparring partners in.
Remember that you are as a rule, the faster your progress on low!
Another, slightly more than the analytical approach is the division of these positions further. Split allows any of these three positions in technical fields:
The contributions of this position.
Transitions your position to a better
position.
Guard passes / escapes there if you're in bad position.
If we believe that these three types of skills for each of the key positions, we have at the end of 24 skills:

Now, I normally not affect the duties, but I would like you to try this. To this list one more time and find out if you know at least two techniques for each area.
And for savings and play and feel at ease on land, you must have at least some
good possibilities for each of 24 areas.
This approach will also help you identify possible improvements.
Hypothetical, we say that you know, 17 sweep of the open guard, but you're completely lost, if you half of his guards.
